Federal health officials have issued additional warnings
about an ongoing Salmonella outbreak, now linking a second brand to the
infections. Initially tied to a Busseto Foods charcuterie sampler sold at Sam's
Club, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that cases
have nearly doubled, reaching 47 individuals across eight more states.
In the ongoing investigation, interviews with affected
individuals uncovered that four people had purchased Fratelli Beretta brand
Antipasto Gran Beretta from Costco before experiencing illness. Both products
were sold in twin packs, and any lot code is considered potentially
contaminated. Although these items have been removed from store shelves, health
authorities are concerned that consumers might still have them in their
refrigerators, emphasizing the importance of disposal.
Among the 47 patients associated with the outbreak, 10 have
been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported. The illness onset dates
range from November 20, 2023, to January 1.
Minnesota's agriculture department previously identified the
outbreak strain in an unopened package of Busseto brand charcuterie sampler.
Whole-genome sequencing conducted by the CDC predicts resistance to ampicillin,
kanamycin, streptomycin, and sulfisoxazole. While many Salmonella infections
resolve without antibiotics, the CDC warns that some cases may be challenging
to treat using commonly prescribed antibiotics.
